ONE NAPA VALLEY INITIATIVE – CITIZENSHIP LEGAL SERVICES
Citizenship Legal Services (CLS) is a collaborative of four nonprofit organizations: Puertas Abiertas, On The Move, UpValley Family Centers, and the Immigration Institute of the Bay Area. CLS was launched by Napa Valley Community Foundation (NVCF) as part of its One Napa Valley Initiative (ONVI) in 2013, aimed at nurturing a more inclusive Napa County, and to provide immigrant legal services and pathways for residents to feel secure and engaged in the community.
CLS is dedicated to offering free or low-cost legal assistance and related legal immigration services to residents who qualify to apply for citizenship. In addition, CLS assists lawful permanent residents with citizenship interview and exam preparation, including civics and English-for-naturalization classes.
Immigration legal services and consultations are provided by an attorney or Department of Justice (DOJ) accredited representative. All volunteers are trained and supervised by an immigration attorney/DOJ accredited representative.
Classes, Workshops, and Tutoring
CITIZENSHIP CLASSES AND TUTORING
We offer free bilingual (Spanish and English) Citizenship classes that will help you to be ready for your Citizenship Test; this class covers United States government, history, and civics, all topics tested during the naturalization interview.
We also coordinate volunteer tutors who are available to assist our clients in preparing for the civics exam. If you are interested in becoming a tutor, please visit our volunteer page.
The Citizen Legal Services (CLS) collaborative offers monthly Citizenship Workshops to help legal permanent residents complete their Citizenship packet at monthly workshops.
PLAZA COMUNITARIA – SPANISH LITERACY CLASSES
In partnership with the Mexican Government, we offer Plaza Comunitaria, adult classes in Spanish language literacy, basic education and ESL classes. These classes are designed for those who desire a better education for better opportunities, and may achieve basic and secondary education certificates, which are accredited by the Mexican Secretary of Public Education.
These classes allow adults who immigrated to the U.S. to work towards higher levels of education based on their last grade attended. Upon completion of each grade level, students receive recognition of completion from the Mexican Consulate. Classes are offered in Spanish with a certified teacher. All levels are welcome, elementary, middle and high school levels. GED classes are also offered. Child care is provided. This program is offered in Calistoga, and is free and open to all adults interested in the program.
